The story begins with Voltaire de Bittencourt Pires, a criminal lawyer who started the Pires family line in law. In 1940 his nephew, Oswaldo de Lia Pires, joined, and the partnership behind today’s firm was born.
Oswaldo became a reference name in the jury courtroom in Rio Grande do Sul and pioneered the use of psychology and psychiatry in criminal proceedings. He practised until the age of 91.
Today the firm is led by Flávio Barros de Lia Pires, with the fourth generation of the family and a team trained in-house. Continuity across generations and a preserved way of working are what set us apart.

Founded in 2008 by Flávio Pires and Jader Marques to honour Oswaldo de Lia Pires’s 65 years in practice. It brings criminal lawyers together for debates, seminars and talks, and supports the Jornada Lia Pires, run since 2002 by PUCRS students.
